24th August - Post Card to Doris from Italian Prisoner of War Camp |
Sgt. Lynn Sarrell Ongley released from Italian Camp but soon recatured
and sent to Germany. |
|
The
Armistice of Cassibile[1] was an armistice signed on 3 September 1943,
and made public on 8 September, between the Kingdom of Italy and the Allies
during World War II. Germany moved rapidly, freeing Benito Mussolini and attacking Italian forces in Italy, southern France and the Balkans. Italian forces were quickly defeated, and most of Italy was occupied by German troops, who established a puppet state, the Italian Social Republic. Meanwhile, the King, the government and most of the navy reached territories occupied by the Allies. The Italian Gards left the gates of the camp open and the allied prisonors where briefly free but soon recaptured and taken to prisoner of war camps in Germany. |
