Sgt. Lynn Sarrel Ongley Catured at Tobruk 1942
The Axis capture of Tobruk, also known as the Fall of Tobruk and the Second Battle of Tobruk (17–21 June 1942) was part of the Western Desert Campaign in Libya during the Second World War. The battle was fought by Panzer Army Africa (Panzerarmee Afrika/Armata Corazzata Africa) an Axis (German–Italian) military force in north Africa, which included the Afrika Korps, led by Generalleutnant Erwin Rommel) and the British Eighth Army (General Neil Ritchie) which included forces from the United Kingdom, India, South Africa and Allied contingents.
1943 24th August - Post Card to Doris from Italian Prisoner of War Camp
Sgt. Lynn Sarrell Ongley released from Italian Camp but soon recatured and sent to Germany.
The Armistice of Cassibile[1] was an armistice signed on 3 September 1943, and made public on 8 September, between the Kingdom of Italy and the Allies during World War II.
Germany moved rapidly, freeing Benito Mussolini and attacking Italian forces in Italy, southern France and the Balkans. Italian forces were quickly defeated, and most of Italy was occupied by German troops, who established a puppet state, the Italian Social Republic. Meanwhile, the King, the government and most of the navy reached territories occupied by the Allies.
The Italian Gards left the gates of the camp open and the allied prisonors where briefly free but soon recaptured and taken to prisoner of war camps in Germany.
